New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
