A large-scale rescue and recovery operation is presently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of missing sailing vessels carrying aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Search Missions Deployed

Mexico has deployed naval assets and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying a minimum of 9 personnel, as stated by a navy statement.

The vessels had been scheduled to reach Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.

Context of Aid to the Island

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.

"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are equipped with suitable navigational gear and communication devices," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine crew members are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are collaborating completely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Recent Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.

That vessel, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, formula milk, cycles and food.

Broader Geopolitical Backdrop

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led efforts to ship essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.

The United Nations have since warned of ""severe" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 operations cancelled in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Political measures have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from different leaders underscoring the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.

In response to certain proposals, a high-ranking Cuban official stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their present status remains unclear.

The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the boats and ensure the security of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
