The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and being named best player.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
