Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress After Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
