Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
