Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
At least 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
