Hardline Ex- Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile's New President.

After a definitive final ballot, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.

A Commanding Victory

After over 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having in the past been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Platform Focused On Security and Migration

Noted for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was primarily centered on promises to address growing crime and significantly curb immigration.

He consistently pointed to migrants, especially the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the election cycle, he issued an stern warning for them to exit before the new term begins or face removal.

His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as building camps, border walls, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the military presence on the northernmost frontier.

Within a Broader Trend

Numerous analysts interpret Kast's win as fitting into a larger rightward trend in Latin America, following recent political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other analysts further describe it as a part of the predictable alternation of power between left and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Ruling Without a Solid Majority

In spite of his clear electoral victory, Kast will not command an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even when various conservative parties are grouped together.

This political reality may hinder his agenda, such as a promise to slash public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to offered a clear explanation.

"There are many questions about how a Kast presidency will be that remain unclear because he has not explained how he will do them," commented a political analyst.

The analyst added, "On the economy, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures common for the right-wing. But where there is much less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his central theme during the race."
