British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
