Brian Eno Urges Public Help to Get Palestinian Solidarity Song to UK Holiday Chart Peak.
A fundraising initiative is aiming to launch a Palestinian lullaby to the Christmas number one spot. The campaign aims to provide aid to people in Gaza while also showcasing Palestinian cultural expression.
An Opportunity for Support and an "Unlikely Coup"
Composer and producer Brian Eno, who contributes to the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a chance to show solidarity with Palestinians over the Christmas period. He acknowledged the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“That would be amazing if that occurred, yes,” he stated. “I wouldn't be completely disappointed if it fails to, Christmas singles are a category of their own.”
Defiant Message of Dignity and Freedom
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who features in the reimagining of a cultural piece called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the song's defiant core message.
“It has a deeply meaningful spot for a lot of people,” Barghouti said. “The essence is that I would prefer a dignified death than live a life without freedom. That is the core idea of the song; we want to live a life of dignity that we merit as a people.”
Production History and Featured Artists
The single was laid down following a solidarity show held in the autumn. Originally intended to be performed and recorded live, the piece was cut from the show due to scheduling overruns.
The diverse array of musicians appearing on Lullaby includes a group of prominent voices from the scene. All took part in the September show, which managed to collect a substantial amount for relief efforts.
Creation and Launch
Lullaby was brought to life by a group of music creators. The track showcases a fusion of the original Arabic with contemporary English verses.
The organizers behind the campaign have clarified that their goal is to generate maximum funds for a specific fund. These resources will be channeled to initiatives supporting Palestinians through an established charity.
“There is no a specific target,” a spokesperson explained. “We’ll go for as much as possible. Obviously, the higher the total, the greater the impact. All proceeds are directed out to those in need in Gaza.”
The context in the territory was described as its extreme devastation, with a huge proportion of buildings described as destroyed or damaged.
“Given that reality, a few million doesn’t make that much difference. But I think what truly matters is first of all spreading knowledge of this plight and showing there’s another side to the story.”
The single 'Lullaby' is set to be released this Friday. Additionally, a full recording of the charity concert will be made ready to watch on a popular streaming site from the 19th of December.
