Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
