A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
